What are sensory and send markings?

Sensory and SEND markings are thermoplastic paths, circuits and zones designed to help children regulate, focus and calm down through movement and clear spaces. They include calming walk-the-line circuits, breathing and feelings paths, and quiet zones set apart from the busy yard. Drawn with softer colours and gentle sequences, they give children who find a loud playground overwhelming a place and a routine that feels safe. We design them around your pupils and settings, informed by our SEND work, so the layout suits how your children experience the space rather than a generic template.

Why schools choose them

A place to regulate

A calming circuit or quiet zone gives children who find the yard overwhelming somewhere to reset, with a clear routine to follow that feels safe.

Movement that settles

Walking a breathing path or following a gentle circuit helps children come back down, using movement and rhythm to steady themselves.

Designed around your pupils

You know your pupils. We turn what you know into colours, sequences and zoning that suit how your children actually experience the playground.

Types of sensory and send markings we install

Calming circuits and quiet zones designed around your pupils.

Calming and breathing paths

Follow-the-line routes with breathing prompts that guide children through a calming sequence.

Feelings and emotions zones

Markings that help children name and show how they feel, supporting emotional regulation and check-ins.

Sensory circuits

A sequence of gentle movements, balance, stretch, march, to help children organise and focus before or after class.

Quiet zones and safe spaces

Defined calmer areas, set apart from the busy yard, for children who need a lower-key space at break.

How the work goes

Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.

  1. 01

    Survey

We talk with your SEND lead about which children the space is for and how they use the playground, then find a spot with the right level of calm and separation.

  2. 02

    Design

We draw the circuit or zone with softer colours and a gentle sequence, and check it with you so it fits your pupils before anything is laid.

  3. 03

    Install

The markings are masked and applied in thermoplastic on site, and a calming circuit or zone is typically completed within a day.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

Ready to use once cool. We can adjust the layout, add a zone or extend a circuit on a later visit as you see how the children respond.

What do sensory and send markings cost?

A sensory circuit or calming zone commonly falls somewhere around £400 to £1,500 fitted, depending on its size, the number of elements and the colours. A simple breathing path costs less than a full sensory circuit with a quiet zone. Because these are designed around your pupils, we survey and design with your SEND lead, then give you a fixed quote.

Sensory and SEND markings: your questions answered

What are sensory playground markings for?

They help children regulate, focus and calm through movement and clear spaces. A calming circuit or breathing path gives a routine to follow, and a quiet zone offers a lower-key spot away from the busy yard. They are especially useful for SEND pupils and for any child who finds a loud playground overwhelming.

Can the markings be designed around our pupils?

Yes, and we think they should be. We design sensory and SEND markings with your SEND lead, around which children the space is for and how they use the playground, choosing colours, sequences and zoning to suit them rather than dropping in a generic template. Our SEND work informs how we approach it.

Are calming colours available?

Yes. We use softer, calmer colours for sensory and SEND designs rather than the brightest of the palette, because the aim is to settle children rather than stimulate them. We confirm the exact palette with you on the design drawing.
