St Barnabas get active with 1k a day

Uniplay were delighted to be asked to install a 1 kilometre circuit in thermoplastic footprints at St Barnabas Primary School in Darwen.
The initiative to increase the fitness and well-being of pupils follows in the footsteps of Pride of Britain Head Teacher Elaine Whylie’s scheme at St Ninians Primary School in Scotland. Uniplay consulted with Mrs Whylie earlier this year to ensure our Daily Mile circuits were installed in the best possible way to ensure sustainability. Having worked with many schools around the country to increase fitness in the playground, St Barnabas’ Sports and physical well-being co-ordinator Emily Gardner contacted Uniplay to work with them to develop a circuit for their school.
The Lancashire Schools partnership have piloted the ‘daily mile’ within schools but Mrs Gardner believed that a 1 kilometre circuit was a much more achievable and sustainable target for their pupils, with the reception class starting at 4 years old. The distance also fitted conveniently on their playground into 10 laps.
Mrs Gardner hopes the scheme will not only increase the fitness levels of their pupils but also improve performance in the classroom.
The scheme at St Barnabas will officially launch on Monday 20th June with Blackburn Rovers mascot ‘Rover the Dog’ assisting with the fun run.
Good luck to eveyone at St Barnabas.
